National Director
Jean Baptiste Mugarura

Land of a thousand hills, Rwanda was under a feudal Tutsi monarchy which continued through German colonial occupation (1899-1916) and Belgian Mandate (1916-1962). A Hutu revolt overthrew the Tutsi government in 1959, with many Tutsi killed or driven into exile.

For centuries, the tensions and bitterness between Hutu and Tutsi have dominated the country. The efforts of the military government in the 1980s to rebuild harmonious relationship between the two peoples was damaged by the Ugandan invasion in 1990. Civil war has crippled the economy and brought cronic hunger to some areas.
