Information for National Directors
As National Directors and Coordinators, you have an important role to play both in the General Assembly and the Young Leader Development and Empowerment Process. Your involvement is critical. As in past General Assemblies, this event will provide you with fellowship and inspiration and an opportunity to resolve some business items for the organization.
Building off the success of the 2003 General Assembly in Brazil, the key focus of this General Assembly will be on the development and empowerment of our Young Leaders. The theme 'Empowered' (Acts 6:6-7) is based on the development of our Young Leaders, but includes other components that will impact you, your Board Chairs and alumni.
In preparation for this event and the launch of the Young Leader Development and Empowerment Process, you are encouraged to begin thinking and praying about the Young Leaders you would like involved in this process. Your Young Leaders need to be selected by 31 December 2007.
It is the National Director's or Coordinator's responsibility to identify the Young Leaders from your nation that you want to participate in the 2-year Young Leader Development and Empowerment Process. Once identified, invite your Young Leaders to fill out an application. We are encouraging each nation to bring five of their Young Leaders; however, we know that this will be a challenge for some nations. You are welcome to have less than 5 Young Leaders participate. We believe that even having one or two Young Leaders participating will be of enormous benefit to your ministry. For those who want to bring more than five Young Leaders, you are welcome to do so, however, we will only be able to provide travel subsidies for up to five Young Leaders from each nation.
Each Young Leader that is approved for the 2-year Young Leader Development and Empowerment Process will be awarded a scholarship to cover the costs of the initiative. However, these scholarship funds will not be directly distributed to the Young Leader or National Director. They will be applied directly to the costs of the process.
The only costs that will be incurred by the Young Leaders accepted into the 2-year process are those associated with General Assembly. As their National Director/Coordinator, you can submit up to five applicants to your Area Director for approval to receive travel subsidies to attend GA 2008. Please be aware that if you approve more than five Young Leaders to participate in the Young Leader Development and Empowerment Process, they will be required to attend General Assembly and will need to cover their own travel and conference costs.
- Select your Young Leaders: The following criteria have been designed to help you in your Young Leader selection process. Please select Young Leaders that are:
- between the ages of 18 to 30 years of age.
- already involved in YFC and have a proven track record in leadership in your ministry.
- gifted with the potential to take on key leadership roles in your national ministry.
- the very best of your Young Leaders.
You should not look for:
- Young people not currently in YFC leadership.
- Young people that may become leaders some day.
As you begin this process, we encourage you to ask your prayer team to begin praying for you and the Young Leaders you are considering for this 2-year process.
- Invite them to apply: Once you have selected your Young Leaders, have them download the Application or fill out the online application for the 2-year Young Leader Development and Empowerment Process. If completed online, a copy of their application will be sent directly to their National Director/Coordinator, and to the General Assembly office.
- Notify those accepted: Once you have reviewed and accepted your Young Leaders' applications, we encourage you to issue them an acceptance letter. A sample letter will be forwarded to you at a later date.
- Inform your Area Office: You will need to send a notification to your Area Office indicating the Young Leaders you have chosen to represent your nation. If needed, up to five of your Young Leaders can apply for subsidies to cover their travel costs to General Assembly. These subsidies must be approved by your Area Director.
- Register for General Assembly: You will need to register both yourself and your Young Leaders for General Assembly. You can register online at beginning 15 September 2007.
Upon acceptance, your Young Leader is expected to commit to the 2-year Young Leader Development and Empowerment Process designed by Don Osman and the ministry team. They will also be required to complete each of the components listed in the 2-year process Timeline, as well as attend the General Assembly in September 2008. See What Young Leaders Need to Know for more detaileds on what is involved.
Since two of the key components of the 2-year Young Leader Development and Empowerment Process are mentoring and coaching, we expect that your chosen Young Leaders will be mentored regularly over the two year period by either yourself or a qualified YFC leader in your nation. We also hope that you will accept an offer to be trained as a coach at some point in the next two years. This would involve being coached one hour per month over 6 months and then training as a coach 3 to 4 hours per month for six months. Additional information on further involvement will be sent to you in the coming months.
