Process Time Line
Using the General Assembly (GA) Young Leader's profile, veteran YFC leaders will identify the Young Leaders in their nation they wish to participate in the Young Leader Development and Empowerment Process. The initial group will consist of a minimum of five from each nation. However, potentially more Young Leaders from each nation will be identified, particularly if the nation has many ministry sites. From those identified, five from each nation will be selected by the National Director (and submitted to the Area Director for approval) to receive scholarships to attend GA 2008. Additional Young Leaders above the select five can still participate in the Young Leader Development and Empowerment Process; however, they will need to cover their airfares and other costs to attend the conference.
Mentoring Materials will be dispensed between January and May. In order to facilitate the process, a compilation of materials will be given to each National Director. These materials will consist of:
- a Young Leaders Application
- a Mentoring Agreement
- a Mentoring Manual
- a Leadership Goal Worksheet
- a Final Evaluation and Review
Mentoring Contracts will be signed between March and June. Each of the young leaders will complete the application and they along with their veteran staff will sign the mentoring contract. This contract will explain the time-line as well as the expectations of commitment. One of the first tasks the mentoring pair will complete is the Leadership Goal Worksheet. Together they will look at the skills and desires of the young leader and the needs of the ministry. They will then identify a leadership role/goal that the young leader will be striving towards. Ideally, at the end of the two years the young leader will in place in the leadership role the two have identified.
Credentialing 101 materials will be dispensed between April and June. It is imperative for the staff of YFC to know who we are as an organization. To know our history and theological beliefs as well as why we do ministry the way we do. Credentialing 101 is a workbook that will answer all of these questions. As the young leader works through the manual, the mentor will be able to answer questions as well as share the particulars of ministry in their nation. Four months will be given to complete the course.
The initial twenty coaches who completed the requirements to be CoachNet Trainers will have coached forty staff that are now qualified to train others. These sixty coaches will now begin training and coaching the young leaders. During this CoachNet training the young leaders will be coached in practical leadership experiences at a local, regional, and national level. The young leaders will receive all of the training to be eligible for coaching certification from CoachNet International.
The mentoring process will continue at General Assembly. The mentoring manual that was given to the National Directors will be given to the young leaders. Plus, each of the young leaders will have times they will meet with their mentor in order to help them process what God is doing in their lives at GA. The mentors will help them to reflect on how this will affect them and their ministry when they return home.
One of the items taught at GA will be Small Groups. Eighty of the young leaders will receive training on facilitating a small group prior to GA and they will be the small group facilitators at GA. A Small Group manual will be given to each person attending, so the ones who were not trained prior will still receive the materials and experience being in a small group.
The Journey Series is the discipleship series for the Generation Next Now strategy (the YFC global ministry strategy to empower a generation of young leaders). The series consist of sixteen lessons to be used in a small group setting. The mentor, along with the young leader, will go through the two books on evangelism together. In this way all of the young leaders, those whom attended GA and those whom did not, will have had the opportunity to be a part of a small group. They will have also gained a knowledge and familiarity with the Journey Series so that they will be able to take others through the series.
The young leader will select ten to twelve youth to begin a small group. They will use the Journey Series as their curriculum and will go through the entire Journey Series with their small group.
The young leaders have now been in a mentoring relationship with their mentor for nearly one year. The young leaders are now asked to begin a mentoring relationship with a young person whose life they feel they can build into. In this way not only will they be mentored but will also be mentoring.
A list of books and articles will be given to the National Director. These items will be read by the young leader and mentor and will be used for guided discussions. The list is currently being compiled and will be given by January.
The young leaders will take three courses from YFC University. They are:
- 10 Reasons to Believe in the Christian Faith
- A Survey of the Old Testament
- A Survey of the New Testament
- YFC Statement of Belief
The young leaders will read through the Prayer Triplet manual and then select and begin their Prayer Triplet. Young leaders will be involved in prayer groups the whole year.
As believers, and especially as leaders, we need to continually be working on our individual spiritual formation. Youth For Christ International has partnered with Heart Transformation to provide materials and training in this process. The young leaders will attend a Heart Transformation conference in their area or participate in a Heart Transformation group.
The young leaders will receive materials on developing and completing an intercultural missions experience. This will involve leading a group of young people on a mission venture/trip. Preferably the experience will be an international context. If this is not possible, they need to find a location outside of their culture and comfort zone, with young people in an unreached people group of youth.
Youth for Christ reaches young people everywhere, working together with the local church and other like-minded partners to raise up lifelong followers of Jesus who lead by their godliness in lifestyle, devotion to the Word of God and prayer, passion for sharing the love of Christ and commitment to social involvement. » Learn more on the YFC website
